i trust you are catching up on your other classes – hope final exams and papers are going well.  i wanted to remind everyone that i would like you to place an archive cd/dvd in my mailbox by monday, may 11th.  the archive disk should contain the following:

_any relevant art analysis diagrams and photos of your final art analysis models

_any relevant toy analysis diagrams and photos of your final toy prototypes

_any relevant site analysis diagrams, final drawings and photos of your final diagrammatic models in the group site model

please flatten all image files – no bloated PSD’s.  email with any questions.

i feel like this quote from Professor Mark Taylor from Columbia sums up our semester:

“Do not do what I do; rather, take whatever I have to offer and do with it what I could never imagine doing and then come back and tell me about it.”

with less than 2 weeks left in the semester it is important that you focus on the clarity of your design concept.  as i have stated several times during the second half of the semester – this is not a comprehensive building project, rather an attempt to test the methods you employed at the scale of the toy on the conceptual design of a school.  the longitudinal section/section perspective should be your main presentation drawing – and therefore should be mocked up for friday.

for tomorrow [monday] you should revise your 1/32″ model to fit into the group site model.  in addition, you should have also revised your plan and section diagrams based on the feedback you received during wednesday’s mid-review.  feel free to start a desk crit list for tomorrow – i will be seeing each of you on either monday or tuesday of this week.

I wanted to post some common questions and suggestions that came up during desk crits this week.

The first is the Brooklyn Bridge Park’s proposed expansion to the west of our site.  You do not have to address this issue but you may be interested to know that New Dock Street [the western edge of the site] will become a part of the expanded park space.  Click on the rendering below for further details.

The second is the concept of the modular that many of you used in the design of your toy and the possibility of translating that to the scale of the building.  The images below are of Maya Lin’s “Systematic Landscapes” and Shigeru Ban’s Naked House.  Both of these projects address how the module of the cube can become a space to inhabit by adapting to different site and program constraints.  Click on the images below for further details.

The third, and final, recurring theme was how to address the shell of the Tobacco Warehouse.  Below are a few projects that I feel successfully use some of [certainly not all of] the possible intervention strategies  The Stone Ruin House clearly defines the old and new construction, using the ruins as a shelter for the modern box inside.  The Dirty House uses  an old warehouse shell for work space while the living space, with its delicate steel structure, floats above the massive massive masonry walls.  And finally, the Gardengate uses transparent mesh in order to hover over an existing courtyard – the new construction never touching the ground.  All of these projects use the design convention of “reveal” in different ways in order to insert new construction into an existing building.  Click on the images below for further details.

Here is a PDF of Friday’s diagram + model presentation – these are meant to serve as examples to get your wheels turning, not the only way to create diagrams and sketch models.  Below is a list of what I am expecting for next week.

For Monday you are to produce 3 sets of diagrams, in both plan and/or section, exploring the translation of your toy analysis and fabrication [i.e. particular Froebel Gifts and Occupations] as well as site specific experiential data.

The first set of diagrams should demonstrate the Froebelian concepts of color, shape, number, extent, symmetry, proportion, surface, lines, rings, and points.

The second set of diagrams should reveal sensory data you have collected walking, photographing and researching the site [i.e. public vs. private space, noise, neighborhood approach, procession, important views, points of collection, etc.]

The third set of diagrams should create a hybrid of the relevant data revealed in the first 2 sets of diagrams.  An example for the third set of diagrams could be how number and proportion may help develop a hierarchy for the sequencing of the collective approach to the site versus the individual.  Each of your diagram interests will be unique due to your own toy analysis and site experience – variety is the goal.

You should have 3 diagrams for each set [at a size of 11x17] at a consistent scale 1″=100′* – you may scale up to 1″=50′ if you feel it is necessary.

Much like your painting analysis in Assignment 1, the goal of the diagrams is to isolate important aspects of the site and program in order to develop a spatial hierarchy.  We will meet in small groups of 6 on Monday with individual desk crits on Wednesday and Friday – the goal is to have 3 sets of diagrams and 3 sketch models complete by the end of next week.

Hello All -

Hope you had a restful break and are ready to get started on our elementary school in Brooklyn.  We will begin the design process by completing a site analysis and precedent study.  Your research will encompass the following:

History

For historical maps a great place to start is the Sanborn Maps [note: to access this server you need to be logged into the UNCC 49er Network]

You should become familiar with the history of DUMBO and Brooklyn Manufacturing [you can begin here]

Context

The site info that I have collected is in the classes folder under “brooklyn_site” – in that folder you will find aerial photographs, dwg files, etc.

The present day planning initiatives for the DUMBO Historic District [park expansion, mixed-use development, etc.]

Precedent

There are [3] Kindergarten Precedent Projects – Lucy Daniels Foundation by Clark and Menefee Architects; Els Colors Kindergarten by RCR Arquitectes; and Delft Montessori School by Herman Hertzberger.  The images you collect should be placed in the Dropbox and will be made available to the entire studio – a brief description [a few sentences] should also be placed in the folder as a PDF.

You should also become familiar with Adaptive Reuse Architecture – your design project must respond to the context of the existing factory walls.  One example would be S(ch)austall by FNP Architekten – I will elaborate further on this topic as Assignment 3 develops.

*As I stated last week – your process does not have to be organized on presntation boards, however what you have up on the wall should be legible and graphically organized.
